When I am at the salon, I like to step back and take a look at who comes and goes. I look at all the various people and all their beautiful and individual personalities. I’m so fortunate to own a salon and I can witness first hand all of these individuals and personas and then group them into subcultures. Image and essence are something unique that clients should own and celebrate. I believe they do. I myself celebrate diversity and expressionism in my chair everyday! I love that my clients come in all ages, races and stages in their lives. I find it a privilege to have a relationship of sorts with each one because everyone is on a different path, a journey of sorts. I have recently noticed that I love a group in particular. I love them because they own themselves. They are ready to define themselves and they have the balls to tell you what they want and what they think. The Boomers!

Boomers...a generation group who fall within the ages of 55 and 70 years young. I’d bet some may be surprised by this favoritism but the truth is they are causing quite the boom when it comes to celebrating their own personal being. They may be the most rebellious group yet to sit in my chair. From drag queens and soccer moms to musicians and corporate executives, been there done that. My Boomers are not trying to meet a standard. They are not trying to impress anyone. They do not need to! They have been there and have done all of that...and then some! They have already paved the paths. They are vivacious and go-getting while maintaining the strongest sense of self. When it comes to their hair they may be the most fun of all salon subcultures!

According to a recent study from Swarovski, it is there that they took a deeper look at what may be the most well-off yet most adventurous client in this new world of ours. There is a new sense of “down-aging”, a phenomenon that lends this group to feeling 8 years younger on average. Boomers are online for their needs. They run marathons. A third of them are single and dating! They are traveling. They are 50% of the population and they own 70% of the wealth...like a boss!

With grey being one of the hottest color trends in a while, these self-assured clients, who want to look their best, lends themselves to being a very free and fun client! I give them the sharpest haircut I know! The juxtaposition of an edgy haircut and grey hair is simply fabulous! Alternatively, they ARE my most loyal color clients! Enough said!

In full truth, hair is a journey for everyone and every age. That is why we exist as salons, stylists, and sub-cultures. Every client has something neat and interesting they bring to the chair from redheads to hipster beard grooming. Today, in this present moment, it is the Boomer who has me inspired and engaged to ask you now...Where are you in your hair journey?

Thanks for reading!
