When it comes to dressing for the red carpet, hair and makeup aren’t just part of a look, it’s a whole vibe, and the beauty that was served up at the 2022 Emmys gave us all the feels. While most we’re talking about the never-ending nominations for Ted Lasso and Succession, we had our eyes on the real prize — the Red Carpet! Stars like Zendaya, Juno Temple, Kaley Cuoco and Sheryl Lee Ralph shined, literally.
The Top Looks from the 2022 Emmys
Zendaya
Setting multiple records, in 2020 Zendaya became the youngest woman — and the second woman of color — to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama. Winning again this year, Zendaya’s look was one fit for a queen — or Grace Kelly, which is said to be the inspiration behind her style. Wearing a gown created by Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli specifically for the occasion, the full-length black gown featured a fitted bodice that perfectly highlighted her half-up hair.
Her hairstyle, with a Brigitte Bardot feel to it, featured brushed-out curls that fell along her shoulders and was finished with a black silk headband for the perfect finish.
To get a similar look:
- Prep with heat protectant and blow hair dry.
- Set with hot rollers to ensure volume and touch up with a curling iron if needed.
- Then, use a finishing brush to brush hair out — creating a fluffy finish.
- Use texturizing spray or backcomb hair to add volume around the crown and secure it into a half-up ponytail.
- Adorn with a silk ribbon or headband to finish.
Juno Temple
Ted Lasso star Juno Temple never disappoints on the red carpet. From moments with co-stars Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein to iconic wardrobe choices — Juno Temple is always picture perfect. For the 2022 Emmys, Juno wore a Tom Ford archive dress to play up her 90s feel. Floor length, shimmery black, and paired with a choker, her 90s grunge blowout was the ideal hairstyle to match. Of the look, Celebrity Hairstylist Mara Roszak for Wella Professionals said, “We pulled a lot of inspiration from his [Tom Ford’s] own work and decided to leave her hair down - blown out, sleek, chic, side-parted, but with a bit of a 90’s grunge which is just very much Juno.”
To get the look:
- Prep the hair with Roz Santa Lucia Styling Oil.
- Then, blow out the hair as smoothly as possible while still keeping a little bit of volume at the roots.
- From there, flat iron and straightened section keep some natural movement to create a tousled, lived-in, grunge-y blowout.
- You’ll definitely want smooth and straight sections, but nothing too flat.
- Stylist Mara Roszak achieved this by flat ironing the pieces around the face, some pieces underneath, and occasionally on the ends, focusing on the blowout.
- After this, Roszak used Wella Professionals EIMI Dry Me Dry Shampoo to roughen up the roots and add a bit of volume and texture.
- Then, she sprayed her hair with the Wella Professionals EIMI Stay Firm Workable Finishing Hairspray and Wella Professionals EIMI Glam Mist Shine Spray.
- Finally, Roszak took a bit of Roz Willow Glen Treatment Oil on her fingertips to pick a few hair pieces. Juno’s hair is very curly, so she just wanted to add more moisture to the ends.
Kaley Cuoco
The Flight Attendant star made a red carpet debut with the Ozark star Tom Pelphrey at the 2022 awards. Wearing a pink high-low dress with a full short skirt in the front followed by a gorgeous billowing train. Adorned with rosettes, the look was as sweet as could be. Flaunting her perfect fringe, Kaley’s sophisticated look was created by Christine Symonds for Clairol Professional.
To get the look:
- Kaley’s hair was prepped with Clairol Professional Thermal Shine Spray and Leave-In Styling Treatment.
- Then, Symonds gave her a voluminous blow dry and pulled her hair back in a loose low pony but didn’t pull all the way through on the second wrap to leave a knot.
- Then she kept out her bangs and added some Thermal Shine Spray to make sure everything stayed in place.
“That’s it. The look is super simple and effortless.” Says Symonds.
Sheryl Lee Ralph
Setting records as the second black woman to Win Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Ralph took home the Emmy for Abbott Elementary — a show that took home several wins. During her speech (which some call the greatest Emmy speech of all time), she sang a line from “Endangered Species” landing a standing ovation for the actress. Alongside her beautiful performance and emotional acceptance speech, Ralph’s look was also turning heads. Wearing a strapless full-length black gown with a high slit and pop of orange, the gown was perfectly juxtaposed with her scintillating hair — a high, sleek ponytail with a long braid featuring perfectly placed gemstones from root to tip. She definitely had the best speech and hair of the night.
To get a similar look:
- To get the look, follow similar steps of creating a snatched ponytail and braid.
- On smooth hair, add pomade or hairspray and use a finishing brush to pull hair back into a high ponytail.
- From here, use a shine spray or pomade to braid the ends and create a smooth finish.
- Then, place gemstones accordingly. While many hair gems are self-affixing, you can use eyelash glue or hair gel for extra hold.
While the stars were stunning and the looks flawless, the high point of beauty at the Emmys was the individualization each style had — a trend we’ll see a lot more of this year.
