As a 3-time winner of the Expo Salon Team of the year and 2014 AHFA Australian Hairdresser of the Year, Emiliano Vitale has proven his artistic ability and eye for aesthetic. What we don’t often get to see are the hours of preparation and the amount of inspiration that go behind his beautiful looks. Learn more about Emiliano, how he began styling and who his mentors were along the way.
What drew you to hair styling?
I started as an 11-year-old working after school and in the school holidays in my father’s salon. I had always been drawn to it, as all of my cousins, my father and aunties are all hairdressers. It’s in the family!
What is your favorite technique to use?
I just love cutting hair, and I also don’t mind a braid.
What has been your biggest defining moment in your career?
Winning Hair Expo Salon Team of the Year for a 3rd time was pretty special, as was winning 2014 AHFAs Australian Hairdresser of the Year. However without a doubt walking on stage at the Royal Albert Hall with my Dad in front of 5000 hairdressers about to present at the Alternative Hair Show is probably the stand out.
Is there a specific area you often find yourself looking to for inspiration?
I just love looking everywhere, however Angelo Seminara, along with Jamie and Sally Brooks are just amazing and I love stalking their work.
What is the one product/tool that you can’t live without?
Killer Curls by KEVIN.MURPHY
Do you have a favorite collection?
I.am.Me - our latest cutting collection, which was also the winning collection for 2016 Hair Expo Salon Team of the Year.
How did you work with your makeup/styling team to craft the final image?
It was simple really. It was all about clean skin with a dewy kind of finish. Then it was supposed to be as close to nude as possible.
How did decide on the color/cut concept?
Each girl was all about suitability and the individual. Hence, the collection name - I.Am.Me.
What statement are you making with your art?
No statement. It is purely about doing what I love.
If you had a superpower, what would it be?
A Healer.
Who were your mentors along the way and how have they shaped your career?
Robert Lobetta really refined my eye and has taught me perfection and perfecting. He is truly amazing.
Do you have any advice for novice stylists?
Learn everything there is to learn. DO NOT take shortcuts, as you will be found out later on.
Take each step, master that step and move on. Be a master right the way through: Practice, Practice, Practice.
Find people you want to be like, work your way into their environment and find a way to assist them.
What hair/color trends can we look forward to this Fall/Spring?
There is an undone texture to the hair. Looking nearly self-cut, but really well done. Like we have had the balayage revolution over the past few years, this is the grown out haircut. Think 70’s shag with today’s precision and looseness.
Colour will focus on shine and suitability. Anything bright and bold for me is gone!
