The North American Hairstyling Awards, NAHA, is produced by the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) will celebrate 25 years in 2014 as the beauty industry’s leading honor. Bangstyle had the pleasure of getting to know the amazingly talented Lisa Vann, one of this year's nominees in the "Texture" category. Check out our exclusive interview with Lisa to learn a bit more about her collection and what fuels her passion for hair.

Tell us a bit about your nominated collection. What was the creative process like? Inspiration?
Summer is the time to shine! A focus on metallics in the hair with shimmers of gold.  I wanted to take blondes to different levels ranging from platinum to medium blonde with an expensive overcast of gold. Shine was made luxe with rich stunning gold tones at every level. I had a bolt of gold silk fabric from Paris that was my Inspiration.

Were there collections in other categories that you found inspiring?
I really love the Master category:  Alain Pereque & Richard Ashforth, Chrystofer Benson, Vivienne Mackinder Anne Pacitto and Ruth Roche.

What is your favorite hair texture to style and why?
There is not one texture that is alike. If a guest wants curl, I perm. If a guest wants wave, I retexturize. I really like working with professional texture products to alter curl to a new style for guests, it gives them some different then what they have had there whole life.

What is your favorite aspect of being a stylist?
Change! I love making changes to my guests. You would not likely see me doing what I did 3 months ago when it comes to styling. Nothing I did a year ago when it comes to color.

What was one defining moment in your career?
Joining the Aveda professional team. My core group of support and inspiration comes form the stylists I have worked with and from my experiences being on this amazing team. Charlie Price, William Edge, Ray Civello, Ted Gibson, Ana Karzis Ginger Boyle, Tony Masciangelo, Nick Aarojo, Van Council, Daniel Holzberger, Antoinette Beenders, Rodney Cutler, Frank Rizzieri and so many more.

What fuels your passion? In other words, what gets you out of bed in the morning?
I am so lucky to have a beautiful salon, an amazing team, and great guests. I can’t wait to get in to work, and to see what the day will bring. It is always different.

If you could offer your younger self one piece of advice, what would you say?
5 years ago I was much more emotional with my career. Now, I would tell my young self it's your business, your brand, stay strong, and don’t worry so much about what one might say to you sometimes.. ‘Focus on the positive’ and your passion and talent will shine through.

What area of hair would you like to explore more?
Men’s hair cutting and barbering -  I have really enjoyed putting a trend styling to all the cuts I have been doing. I like telling a new story for men.

Who influenced you the most in your career?
Easy answer.. With being an Aveda educator most of my career, Horst is the easy answer.  But I have such amazing support in my career right now. I have to say I have turn to stylists and business owner that Horst has influenced Charlie Price, William Edge, Antoinette Beenders ,

What is your most recent obsession?
Tokyo fashion weeks. It is outrageous!
