What was the inspiration behind your collection?
I wanted to create multi tonal play of color within a bright color spectrum that was bold, but with a refined and finished edge. A reflection of Classic hair shapes juxtaposed with conceptual colors.
What was the method for selecting your team? Had you worked with them before?
There are so many things to do on shoot day, so I need a team of artists that I don't have to micro manage and can fully trust to execute the work. I've worked with my photographer, Will Taylor, for many years, he understands my crazy requests.
What techniques did you use to create your style?
OMG so many! From triple Balayages, color melts, color blocking, highlights, base breaks and that was just the color. LOL.
What is the most essential part of preparation leading up to your shoot?
Give yourself time to plan, many things change leading up to the shoot, you have to leave some space to maneuver. Do not forget to account for the small stuff like asking if people have food allergies or restrictions, and creating concise directions to shoot locale if it's hard to get to. Creating a music playlist to keep the crew jumping and energized. How to stagger model arrivals so you don't have 3-4 guys or girls just sitting there waiting. Time is money in modeling! Give yourself time to pow wow with your team before the models arrive and to connect and remember why you are there - to create something amazing.
What appeals most to you about competition work?
It's not about the competition with others, but the challenge you pose to yourself. If it's scary it's worth doing, allow yourself to dream and be scared to the wonderful possibilities.
What other nominated collections inspired you?
Alain Pereque's Collection for Contemporary Classic is simply amazing! Did you see the lines and the makeup on that Parisian bob?! Amazing!
What’s the one tool or product you can live without?
Mighty Hair Spray by Number 4 High Performance Hair Care.
What advice can give to the next generation of stylists?
Master your basics and quit trying to be the next Instagram star. You might be able to do unicorn hair like a champ but if you only know how to do loose waves and your updo prowess consists of braids then we have a problem.
What’s your average Saturday night like?
I live in Hawaii, take a guess?? LOL!
What’s your guilty pleasure?
In Hawaii, it's air conditioning!!
Who is the one person you don’t want to forget to thank on stage?
My Husband, but I didn't get to the stage by myself, it’s thanks to the group of people involved who believe in my vision and help me realize it.
