Last week, I got a frantic text from my mom, “Honey what color dye should I use, my hairdresser is out of town for the next 3 weeks and I look like a skunk.” NONE, I hurriedly reply. “Please DO NOT color your own hair,” I begged. Mind you, not only am I a beauty writer, I’ve actually gone to cosmetology school and worked behind the chair for several years – I thought she would know better than to ask such a blasphemous question.
Flashback to high school, I remember my mom putting on gloves and coating her entire head in box dye. Oh man... I didn’t know it then, but I definitely do now, that was SUCH a mistake! And she pulled it through the ends too… EVERY TIME! (Anyone else cringing at the moment?)
While I’m sure she’s heard me say this multiple times, sometimes everyone needs a refresher - as an official PSA (and only because I love you all and your hair) please do not resort to box dye if your stylist is on vacation.
