While we all have a signature look, but after a while it can be really easy to feel as though you’re stuck in a style rut. By making a few simple changes to the way you curl your hair, you’re easily able to update your finished look. Keep reading below to learn 3 different ways to use a curling iron to create unique wave styles.

Undone Waves

  • Always prep for styling by applying a heat protectant.
  • Section hair, beginning at the bottom half and working your way up.
  • Take smaller sub-sections about an inch in diameter and starting at the base, wrap hair around curling iron once or twice and release.
  • Then move down to the mid-lengths and ends, wrap around one of two times then release. Each time hold the hair for a few sections and release to create a loose bend instead of a tight curl.
  • To create a more defined look, rake pomade through the hair or give a spritz of texturizing spray for a fluffy finish.

Beach Waves

  • Either add sea salt spray to damp hair and allow it to dry or give a spritz of texturizing spray on dry hair, then layer a heat protectant before applying heat.
  • Section hair, beginning at the bottom and working your way up. Taking smaller sections will allow it to appear more beachy/piecey.
  • Take each subsection and wrap it around the entire length of the barrel.
  • Alternating your wrap forward and back in each section.
  • Repeat over the entire head, curling away from the face in the face frame area.
  • Allow to cool, then use fingers or a wide-toothed comb to separate.
  • Add a spritz of hairspray and scrunch to keep waves looking their best.

Smooth Waves

  • Apply heat protectant and section the hair.
  • Using large sections for a smoother finish, begin at the bottom of the head and work your way up.
  • Place each subsection in the curling iron with a clamp and twist the hair into the barrel.
  • Release hair and twist the barrel out as you let the hair fall.
  • Work in the same direction throughout the head and continue to feed the hair through the barrel or use a flat-wrap technique if that is easier for you.
  • Once the entire head is curled, rake through with fingers or a wide-toothed comb and add a mist of shine spray for a polished finish.
