BANGSTYLE: When did you open Ken Picton Salon? What made you want to open your own salon?
Ken Picton Salon: I opened my original salon, called the Zoo, in 1990 in the city centre, moving to the Cardiff Bay area in the year 2000 from when the salon was renamed Ken Picton.
BANGSTYLE: What is the vibe and décor of the salon? What’s the inspiration behind it?
Ken Picton Salon: It’s like a boutique hotel – clean, slick and expensive, but with individual features and touches.
BANGSTYLE: What kind of client experience do you create at the salon?
Ken Picton Salon: We cherish each client that visits the salon and are passionate about providing a 5 star service. The salon also provides you with the finest beauty, nails and make up treatments as well as good food! We’ve also teamed up with award-winning kitchen and bar Mimosa situated next door so that a long hair or beauty appointment is an opportunity to indulge in great food too. We’ve won numerous Customer Care and Salon of the Year awards for our destination salon experience.
BANGSTYLE: What is Ken Picton Salon known for?
Ken Picton Salon: We deliver great customer service and were given the prestigious Most Wanted Award for Best Salon Experience in 2011. The salon has a strong team of 40 and has worked at London Fashion Week shows including Vivienne Westwood and Ashish. We’re known for being the leading salon in Wales and delivering the perfect cut, colour and beauty service, and being first with the hottest new products and treatments.
BANGSTYLE: Any at-home hair advice for our readers?
Ken Picton Salon: Using the correct hairdryer will not only reduce your drying time but will also help keep your hair looking and feeling great. The GHD Air is the most sought after hair dryer at the moment as its advanced ionic technology reduces frizz and helps create shine. To avoid frizz, use a hair oil as a primer before your other hair products.
BANGSTYLE: Who or what inspires the looks you create?
Ken Picton Salon: The award winning Colour collection was inspired by the Andy Warhol pop art print of Marilyn Monroe. We wanted to explore different colours on the same model with the same haircut. We loved the idea of having four shots with a different colour all put together in one shoot to form a bigger image. The Automik collection explores a modern disco feel with an autumn/winter association, so there are lush red tones visible throughout. Comprising everything from on trend plaits to great cuts and hero volume and texture, this collection is a snapshot of hair from the catwalk to the high street now.
