Sometimes a stylist seeks to do something a bit different than the traditional, and Miguel Gutierrez, aka The Nomad Barber, caught our attention with his Kickstarter campaign aimed at raising enough money to film his quest to barber around the world. Miguel plans to travel to at least 5 continents and film his experiences barbering in different countries, meeting barbers, and experiencing the local culture through the art of barbering.

Check out our interview with the Nomad Barber to hear about his inspirations to set out on this adventure and what he hopes to accomplish!

BANGSTYLE: Can you tell us a bit about your career prior to this plan?

Miguel: I’ve been cutting hair now for coming up to ten years. I started off working in a family run barbershop and when I felt like I needed to move on, I travelled to Australia, and eventually London, where I’ve managed to work with some of the top names in the hair industry. I’m a qualified barber and was only educated in a barbershop. I believe anyone working with men’s hair should hold key knowledge from a traditional barbershop.

BANGSTYLE: What inspired this Nomad Barber plan?

Miguel: The Nomad Barber idea came from my 3 loves in life which are travel, film, and barbering. I wanted to create a way which I can travel and still keep barbering, but also create something visually exciting.

BANGSTYLE: Why did you choose to create a campaign on kickstarter?

Miguel: I’ve managed to raise 3/4 of the money myself for the trip, but I need that last push towards making a professional cameraman happen. It’s a good way for everyone to get involved too, and make my dream come true.

BANGSTYLE: What is your ultimate goal with this plan?

Miguel: Ideally, to make a tv-series/documentary at the end. I also want to take every barber/stylist on that visual journey with me because I know not many people can be as responsible as me and just get up and go haha.

BANGSTYLE: What locations are you visiting and why did you choose them?

Miguel: We are hitting 25-30 countries spanning over 5 continents so far. I chose this path as it covers the old and new of barbering. In India, the trade is a noble and popular trade, where as in Australia, the barber culture is on the up just recently.

BANGSTYLE: What do you hope to learn through barbering in these locations?

Miguel: I want to learn how it differs across the world–what’s done differently? Do guys still moan about their wives in these countries too? How much is a part of their regime? What’s going on in these places? Theres so many questions I want answered and I’m going straight to the sources.

BANGSTYLE: What are you most nervous and excited about in this adventure?

Miguel: I’m terrified about certain places where the language barrier might be intense, also the long days where we can’t find any barbers to meet. I’m most excited for all the characters we’ll meet, it’s going to be a whirlwind.

BANGSTYLE: How are you spreading the word about your campaign?

Miguel: Mostly through social media and family and friends. I’m still way off though so I hope I’ll make it.

BANGSTYLE: What kind of feedback have you received?

Miguel: Nothing but positive so far, it’s great to have such great support and backing from people from all over the world.

BANGSTYLE: What are you plans after this experience?

Miguel: The goal is to create a chain of barbershops, a product line, and a barber school.
