Regardless of gender, enhancing curls can be a challenge, it takes know-how and time to achieve polished defined texture. “Hair is hair…made up of proteins, amino acids, biotin, niacin, vitamin C, etc. To best nourish curls, look at the hair strand and not your guest’s gender. Everyone's natural curls/coils have one thing in common, they tend to be dryer and require more moisture-based products for health, and cream or gloss products for definition and shine,” says Teresa Romero, Creative Director for Sam Villa and Artistic/Education Director for Jose Luis Salon @_teresa_romero.
“As a creative director, my goal is to lead our team in creating inclusive and diverse looks that appeal to a wide range of individuals with a wide range of hair textures. When working behind the chair, stylists are also creative directors for each guest. Take the time to lead them by prescribing products and teaching techniques to maintain their curls so they too can be enlightened on how best to refine their texture at home,” she adds.
When styling curls, consider the following:
- Don't over-shampoo - depending on hair texture, shampoo 2-3 times a week. On days off, just run water through hair and only apply a rinse out conditioner.
- Use a wet brush to disperse a leave-in conditioner through hair followed by a styling gloss or cream, also distributed with a comb/brush.
- With a heat-controlled Sam Villa Artist Series Professional Blow Dryer and diffuser, dry and set curls in place. Once hair is mostly dry, gently push the dryer to the scalp in a bouncing motion to encourage curls to organically separate without the frizz.
