How often do you actually brush your hair? For some it’s every day for others, they probably can’t remember the last time they actually ran a brush through their strands properly. Depending on your hair type, it isn’t always advantageous to brush your hair. For those who wear their natural curl or wave, combing your hair can actually be disastrous to your style — did someone say frizz? No matter what hair type you have, chances are tangles and knots tend to pop up ever so often. For a few quick tips on how best to detangle your hair, keep reading.
Brush Before You Shower
If you’re unable to brush your hair due to hair type, make it a habit to brush out your hair before you shower. To do this, you’ll want to use a paddle brush to gently remove tangles. Start at the ends of your hair and slowly move up toward the roots to ensure you don’t make tangles worse. Additionally, pay attention to the direction of your bristles. Many paddle brushes are designed to be used vertically and horizontally at different times based on your needs. Take a peek at this handy tutorial from Sam Villa to learn exactly what we mean.

Condition and Comb
If you don’t have a paddle brush or prefer to comb in the shower, stash a wide-toothed comb in the shower for easy detangling. As you shampoo, be careful not to make knots worse by using a gentle scrubbing motion. Refrain from rubbing the hair and be sure to apply generous amounts of conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends. Allow the conditioner to absorb and then before rinsing out, run a wide-toothed comb, starting at the ends and working your way up to the roots. This technique can also be done by brushing your hair with your fingers as well as this can usually be even gentler.

Brushing When Wet
While it can be a great idea to use a wide-toothed comb on the hair in the shower, once you’re out of the shower you may want to hold off on brushing with a paddle brush or fine-toothed comb. Removing tangles when hair is dry is usually best because hair is in an extremely fragile state when wet and can cause excess breakage. If you are going to be brushing your hair in this state, always add a leave-in conditioner first and consider using a paddle or wide-toothed comb only, or simply use your fingers!
