The British Hairdressing Awards is always an exciting time for us. We love seeing all the INCREDIBLE collections from some of the best artists the UK has to offer. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the BHA's, presented by HJi and sponsored by Schwarzkopf, and we are thrilled to be able to get to know some of this years amazing finalists. Mark Leeson, this year's British Hairdresser of the Year. Mark's imagery is absolutely stunning. We were so honored to have the opportunity to ask him a few questions about how he stays inspired...
What is different about your BHA nominated collection from past collections?
The difference this year is that it is the first British collection that I have done where I have used my colour skills to the extreme. This collection is about me being completely true to myself and creating something that I love and that epitomises my passion for colour. I’ve completely followed what I believe in and not what I think people expect of me.
Where you draw your inspiration from?
I take inspiration mainly from fashion and the runways, but also from the young talent that we have in the salon and within the hairdressing industry. They’re the ones who are truly groundbreaking and creating very cool work. I personally train all of our new staff not only because I want them to be the best, but because it’s incredibly inspiring for me too!
Is there a particular trend that you’re loving right now?
The trend I am loving right now is more about the lack of specific trends and the fact that hair is quite free and less directional. It’s gone a bit more towards the 80s and it’s much more acceptable now to have crazy colour, or extreme styling – there’s a much more ‘anything goes’ feel to hairdressing now and I love that. If you walk down the street and see someone with a green dip-dye it’s not extreme, it’s accepted.
What is the one product you grab for most often?
Goldwell’s Elumen colour is amazing and I literally can not do my job without it! It allows you to colour hair without compromising on anything. The results are vibrant and so healthy – it’s the most futuristic colour available to hairdressers today.
Describe your craft in 3 words...
