Matching sets are commanding attention this season and it’s no wonder why: The two-piece ensemble does all of the work for you—no need to scour your closet in search of the perfect pants or top to match! But does the same rule apply to your nails? While matching your lipstick to your manicure may seem a little “extra” to some, there is a right and wrong way to sport the trend. Read on to learn the top dos and don’ts of matching your nails to your lips.
DO opt for natural-looking shades
Unless you’re going for an avant-garde look, it’s best to leave the crazy green, yellow and black lip shades to the runway models at Fashion Week. For best results, stick to nudes, pinks, and reds.
DON’T go overboard on nail art
If you plan to match your manicure to your lips, it’s best to let the color do all the talking. Opt for minimal nail art, such as single gems or a geometric design, to ensure the focus remains on your color selection.
DO experiment with finishes
Both lips and nails can have a glossy or matte texture—don’t be afraid to mix and match different finishes to achieve an on-trend look.
DON’T forget to clean up your lines
When the focus is on your nails and your lips, it leaves virtually zero room for error. Use a clean-up brush or a Q-tip to clean up around the nail after applying polish, then use a concealer and a fine-tip brush to clean up your lip color.
DO have fun with it
While we don’t suggest wearing neon green polish and lipstick to your next office meeting, summer is the perfect time to experiment with different shades. Using your polish collection as inspiration for your next lip color selection is an easy way to step outside of your comfort zone and mix up your look.
