We’ve all been there: Your alarm fails to go off and you suddenly wake up with less than 10 minutes to spare before you need to fly out the door. While you may have mastered a five-minute styling routine using your trusty flat iron, feel free to skip it. Messy buns, aka your go-to style whenever you’re sleeping, working out or binge-watching a show on Netflix, are a huge trend at the moment. That’s right, some of your favorite Fashion Week models sported “sleep buns” on this season’s runways and even Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex (aka Meghan Markle) has proven this trend is all the rage. Providing major hair inspiration for hectic mornings. Keep reading to discover easy ways to update your bedtime bun.
Step 1: Assess the situation
Before you make any moves, check to see if your sleep bun is still intact. If it stayed in place, consider yourself lucky—all you need to do is use a boar bristle brush to gently smooth down any flyaways, then you’ll be good to go. If your bedtime bun is in total disarray, proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: Reshape the bun
When you’re short on time, it’s best to avoid restyling your bun at all costs. Instead, use your fingers to reshape your bun. You can either twist any flyaways around the original bun or gently pull the bun apart to create more volume. Once you’ve achieved your desired shape, pin the bun into place.
Step 3: Hide flyaways
Consider bobby pins every sleep bun’s saving grace. Use a boar bristle brush to smooth out any flyaways, then pin them in place if necessary.
Step 4: Pull out a few face-framing pieces
If you really want to master the effortless, “model off-duty” look, then pull out a couple of pieces of hair around your face, by your ears and even a few strands around the nape of your neck.
Step 5: Stick it in place
Before you head out the door, it’s important to give your style some hold. Opt for a flexible hairspray that adds shine, or, use a spray wax to achieve a sleeker style.
