The 2024 Met Gala Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion brought fantasy to reality with the dress code The Garden of Time. The event was inspired by a J.G. Ballard story which references an imaginary tale of a count who cuts roses from his garden to ward off an angry mob from his castle. It brought a focus around a dystopian tale while drawing attention to the impact technology can have on present-day fashion.

Many of us at home were even fooled by a circulating AI image — which only seemed fitting when the event was to discuss how technology can breathe life into garments that are too fragile to be worn IRL.

In addition to raising money for The Costume Institute, each year the event is a feast of the eyes for fashion and beauty lovers around the world. With everything from the whimsical to the dramatic, the 2024 Met Gala had plenty of inspiration to go around — here are a few of our favorites.

A Few Favorite Looks from the 2024 Met Gala

Zendaya

Always light-years ahead of her style, I don’t think we’ve ever met a style of Zendaya’s that we didn’t absolutely adore. This year she donned two ensembles one vintage Givenchy and one by John Galliano, both to be obsessed with. With slight differences to her makeup, they featured traces of the glass skin Pat McGrath labs look created for the most recent Galliano show. Both looks featured a whispy up style created by Ursula Stephen that was put together with the help of Dyson + Living Proof. See the steps to the subtle, delicate, and confident finish below.

Zendaya Met Gala 2024 Hair Step-By-Step

1. Once the hair is shampooed, add the Living Proof Triple Bond Complex

Lily Gladstone 

There’s been a constant buzz around Lily Gladstone since her stunning performance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and with her nomination as the first Native American woman to be nominated for an Oscar. And the light continues to shine around her, now with her Met Gala look. Wearing a sheer caped dress created by Gabriela Hearst, the hair was complemented by Marc Mena using an array of products that breathed life back into her hair following award season and helped create a healthy, shiny finish.

“This is an indigenous-inspired look meant to reflect Lily’s heritage. Throughout awards season, I’ve worked in a braid to all of Lily’s looks – and tonight, the braids are front and center, a culmination of her looks over the past few months. After a long awards season of working with Lily, her hair had a lot of heat and styling damage and I wanted to bring it back to its healthiest. For this Met Gala look, her hair needed to be healthy and shiny looking.” Said Marc Mena.

Lily Gladstone Met Gala 2024 Hair Step-By-Step

5. From the middle, create two braids front and center.
6. Add in hair extensions to bring fullness to the look, since it is a costume gala.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph

Da’Vine Joy Randolph has had a busy award season winning an Oscar for her role in The Holdovers. The 2024 Gala marks her debut attendance at the event and one she has done in show-stopping style. Wearing a custom Gap denim dress, the look paid homage to the denim days of the 60s with a romantic flair. Speaking of her beauty, Tai Simon said, “For Da’Vine’s big night we wanted to accomplish one main objective: showcasing her in her utmost ICONIC & ROYAL form. So with that mission in mind we wanted to emulate Sisi Empress from Austria’s glam with a vivacious texture yet with dignified form. Prepping for this was no easy feat but thanks to Wella Professionals’ Koleston Perfect and Ultimate Repair lines. I was able to not only create this custom ginger perfection but also keep its luster, shine and bonds intact in the process.” 

Da’Vine Joy Randolph Met Gala 2024 Hair Step-By-Step

1. Simon started with a fresh custom unit and lifted the base to a level 6/7 ash light brown using Wella Professionals Blondor Powder Lightener with Welloxon Perfect 40 vol developer throughout and Welloxon Perfect 20 vol on its lace base, being sure to not have too heavy of bleach strokes to not kill the integrity of the hair but also promote dimension even prior to depositing color.
2. After lifting any hair, no matter how great, the health and bonds can be affected, so to combat that I gave the unit a true care wash with Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair collection. Emulsifying the Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Shampoo to a generous lather and coating root to tip and even lace really being sure to get rid of any lightener residue for the entire follicle, and then flowing up the same mechanism with the Ultimate Repair Conditioner being sure to revitalize each strand.
3. The integral component is, after a full wash, spraying Wella Professionals Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Miracle Hair Rescue throughout the damp, clean hair to really pump the life into the tresses and strengthen and repair hair for long-lasting smoothness and manageability.
4. After air drying to deposit-ready form, I then went into coloring this ginger dream. For the base I wanted to be sure to create a natural yet opulent shadow root, so depositing a darker ginger (Koleston Perfect 7/43) was key, then blending from the endpoint with balayage like strokes depositing the high point ginger (Koleston Perfect 77/44) throughout the mid shaft right before the ends. To marry all the tones together and seal the ends I then utilized Koleston Perfect 77/43 for a complete cohesive look.
5. After a long deposit period to ensure the hair was completely saturated, I rinsed with cold water to seal in the color and hydrate the cuticle. A special trick to really locking in strength and adding some extra luster is spraying Wella Professionals Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Protective Leave In thoroughly prior to heat styling.
6. For styling, I tightly barreled curled in opposing directions so that the hair can intentionally flow with structure throughout the night with her comparable to her impeccable denim train.

Harris Reed

Many have been whispering Harris Reed’s name for her elegant and on point dressing of Demi Moore at this year’s Met Gala, but Reek herself is also turning heads with her enchanting and dramatic entrance at this year’s event. Styled by Pete Burkill he says of the look, ”Drawing inspiration from the enchanting beauty of Pre-Raphaelite art, we meticulously crafted a hairstyle embodying a lived-in charm, highlighting Harris Reed's long, eroded copper locks gracefully cascading down his back. Achieving this mesmerising look involved sculpting intricate braids and delicate water waves, evoking the romantic allure of the era. To complement this hairstyle, Harris wore a custom piece, taking inspiration from his latest collection, 'Shadow Dance,' where archive wallpaper was revitalised, stripped back to silk, and repurposed on to garments, symbolising the reawakening of beauty in line with the theme for this year’s Met Gala.”

Harris Reed Met Gala 2024 Hair Step-By-Step

1. To begin our MET look, I opted for the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer using the gentle air attachment to dry Harris’ hair, which was recently fitted with custom 30-inch copper extensions. 
2. As the hair reached the 75% dry mark, I switched to the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler, using the soft smoothing brush and round volumising brush attachments to finish the drying process and add body to the hair.  
3. Following this, I carefully braided selected sections of hair and set the Dyson Corrale™ straightener to 185 degrees, gently applying tension over the braids, coaxing out texture and locking it in for longevity with no extreme heat. 
4. After allowing the braids to cool, I carefully unravelled them, revealing the intricate patterns they had formed.  With the Dyson Corrale™ in hand, I then rocked back and forth on the hair, crafting water waves, particularly focusing on framing the face. 
5. To add the finishing touches, I switched to the Coanda smoothing dryer attachment on the Dyson Airwrap™ to smooth away any flyaways and achieve a refined look, bringing this Renaissance-inspired vision to life.
