As the summer season comes to a close and fall and winter weather is rearing its head, we welcome in a new season of hair color! To get the lowdown of all the best shades we chatted with some of our favourite educators and salon owners in the industry. Keep reading to hear about their top color trends for the season to come.
Mushroom Blonde
Blondes are becoming smokier for 2019. Clients are moving away from vanilla and platinum blondes and toning hair down to more mushroom-like, grey blonde tones. Clients with blonde locks can simply ask their hairstylist for an ashier toner to give their hair an on-trend revamp for 2019. If smoky, muted blonde tones aren’t their thing, beige and honey warm-toned blonde shades are also popular this year. These golden shades with luxurious tones really compliment the skin tone and complexion. –Karen Thomson, Owner of KAM Hair and Body Spa and Scottish Hairdresser of the Year
Gloss It Up
It’s all about super glossy hair for 2019! Think chocolate brunettes with high-shine and inky blacks – the glossier the better! For clients, glossing services are great for keeping hair colour looking shiny at all times, as well as colour enhancing products that can be recommended in the salon to preserve hair colour and shine until their next appointment. –Karen Thomson
Upgrade The Gray
Just when we thought grey hair was out the window, in comes the grey ombre trend, which I love! This is a step away from the all over grey/silvers that have been mulling around on Instagram for quite some time now. With more men and women embracing their greys, the grey balayage is on the rise due to its easy maintenance, yet cool look. By employing the darker roots and lighter grey ends this is a great look to help gradually disguise but still show off greys. If hair is naturally dark this trend is easier to achieve as it’s all about getting super platinum ombre highlights and the dyeing the lightest strands grey. This trend does require the correct upkeep and would recommend KMS Color Vitality Shampoo and Conditioner to avoid colour fading and keep the grey tones for as long as possible. – Neil Barton, Goldwell Ambassador and Owner of Neil Barton
It's Warming Up
From strawberry blonde to deep auburn, no two shades of red hair are the same and finding he right shade of red for clients’ skin tone can be a tricky one, however, red hair has blown up over Instagram recently and is always a winner for the colder months and there are lots of hair inspiration images for clients to choose from. I love the cinnamon shades and mixing highlights with our new Goldwell range in the salon, Pure Pigments, in Red for extra shine and creating a glow that will warm up skin tone during the cooler months. – Neil Barton
For 2019 we will see a lot of copper tones and strawberry blondes with lots of dimension and shine. For brunettes who want to update their hair colour but don’t want to fully commit to an all-over rich and fiery red copper hue, copper highlights are great and will give the hair depth, movement and will also warm the hair up coming into SS19. – Carly Price, Muse of London
Mix It Up With Metallics
Metallics remain popular for 2019. Think shades of silver, rose gold and metallic opals and purples – hair colour that really shines and stands out from the crowd. Always visit a reputable salon for these hair colours to ensure as little damage as possible to the hair. For blondes these hair colours are particularly great and are a great way to update your colour and add some drama! – Neil Barton, Goldwell Ambassador and Owner of Neil Barton
Sweet As Honey
Warm hair colours, like chestnut browns and honey blondes, are incredibly on-trend for summer 2019 and are great for giving the skin warmth. Balayage is also popular for the season and is a great technique to give your hair that summer, sun kissed look, with shades of caramel balayages being particularly popular amongst brunettes and nude balayage being great for blondes who don’t want as high maintenance hair colour during the warmer months. For those who want a more stand out hair colour, playful pastels and more subtle tones like rose pinks and peaches are incredibly popular – Jim Shaw, Owner and Director of Essensuals and EssensualsMEN Billericay
Make It Pop
Bold pop bright hair colours will also be popular this year. Think sunshine like yellows, petrol blues, fiery oranges and fuchsia pinks. These hair colours are not for the faint-hearted and will definitely allow clients to stand out from the crowd and show off their personality. It’s all about pushing the boundaries with colour. If your client is feeling really adventurous, teaming two bright hair colour shades also looks incredible such as blue and green to give the hair a stunning mermaid-like hair colour transformation. – Jim Shaw
