With the announcement from Pantone that Pantone’s Colour of 2018 is Ultra Violet, session stylist, colourist and award-winning salon owner Andrew Smith of Andrew Smith Salons in Hampshire reviews the color and gives tips of how to achieve the shade and upkeep the tone.
Ultra Violet has been described by Leatrice Eiseman (Executive Director at Pantone) as a colour “that lights the way of what is yet to come.” Eiseman goes on to say “we are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of inspiration that is ingenious to Pantone Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level.”
According to milk_shake Creative Team member, Andrew Smith, “Ultra Violet offers hairdressers endless inspiration and there is no doubt that this mystical shade of purple is a colour that we can embrace and interpret for the high street. The dramatically provocative and thoughtful shade that is a far cry from the outburst of 2017’s greenery, will encourage us as colourists, to push our creative boundaries to create consumer driven and incredibly flattering hair colours and tones,” Andrew continues “ the glittery take on regal purple arrives at a time when we focus on 2018’s royal wedding and has been referenced to celebrate the non-conformity and experimentation of artistic icons including Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix.”
Ultra Violet Is Best For: areas with a paler palette, in which you are able to subtly, intensify texture. By cleverly contouring you can enhance the overall shape by creating the perception of added length and width.
How to achieve Ultra Violet: milk_shake’s Direct Colour range offers the ultimate solution to experiment with Ultra Violet and to transform your client’s hair and achieve an instant, non-committal result.
This trend is best suited to the girl or woman with cool brown, blue or green eyes and a cooler, underlying pink skin tone. For those with a warmer, yellow undertone you should slightly amend the formulation to include eggplant - this will perfectly compliment the skin without changing the colour too much.
Ultra Violet is a trend that can be personalised to suit woman of all ages and can be adopted by all personalities. The key to perfection for the individual is the technique used: for a bold, powerful statement you could go global on a full head of pre-lightened hair or for something more subtle and inconspicuous the hue could be used on pre-existing balayage or face-framing highlights. By highlighting key areas with a paler palet you are able to subtly intensify texture and by cleverly contouring you can enhance the overall shape by creating the perception of added length and width.
