2020 was a rough year for hair, and with some states having salons closed again, we seem to still be in the midst of it. We’ve seen at-home color kits, bang cutting guides and styling guides for prolonging your cuts and colors until your trusted stylist can see you again, but most of these are targeted towards women. So what about our male clients who don't want to just buzz it off?
Growing out your hair can be a process, just ask anyone who rocked a pixie and then decided they wanted long locks again. One of the few good things about our current stay at home lifestyle is that it gave us the perfect time frame to attempt a grow out! Still, for the sake of our egos and the other people living in our houses how can we sail through the awkward stages which are bound to come.
Focus on Facial Hair
Facial hair consists of the brows, lashes and beard and is responsible for contouring the face. Whether you rock a beard or a clean shave, keeping up with your facial hair will mask a grown out hair cut. For ideas on how to best manage your scruff, consider celebrities with similar bone structure and see how they trim theirs. If you are planning on keeping your beard make sure to clean up strays and the neckline and invest in a beard oil. YES, beards get shampooed, conditioned and styled.
Goodbye Busy Hair Lines
Your friend, partner or spouse may not be a barber but then can likely help you with this one little adjustment that can make all the difference. After you’ve nailed your facial hair it's time for your neck to get a little cleanup. Try to follow the existing line and mainly focus on cleaning up the ‘extra’ hair on the neck without cutting into the existing hairstyle.
Push it Back
As hair starts to grow it can feel a bit unruly and settle into our faces. Unless that's the look we are going for, investing in a light hold gel or pomade and pushing your hair back can give a dapper look while you are in between cuts.
Play with Products
Typically men have a favorite product, but as their hair reaches new lengths they may need different options. Ask your stylist if they can put together a sample bag of small amounts of different products that you can try on your hair. Now is the time to experiment, worst case scenario you wash it out and start over. We have a few go-to men's products that everyone should be familiar with:
We love a good styling clay for a barely-there feel with a strong punch:
