As the first of the month that is fashion “week”, New York is kicking off the season with a romanticized bang. A mash-up of old made new again, the classics are getting a modern twist. Leopard print is growing stripes as Zebra is quickly becoming the animal print du jour, grunge and punk are making their way back into the mix, which makes us think we’re just a few steps away from a Donna Karan classic reboot, and oversized everything – from jackets to silhouettes are making their way up and down the runway this season.
Marc Jacobs and Tomo Koizumi had their own rendition of these larger than life visions, Coach and R13 heavily touched on grunge while Longchamp and Tory Burch gave us clean lines and bohemian undertones. Keep reading to see the details from some of our favorite shows of the season and learn how to get the hairstyle to go alongside them. If fashion has taught us anything, it’s that street style starts on the runway and inspiration for the season ahead are just a scroll away!
MARC JACOBS

There’s a common feather woven through the show, literally. Their Fall/Winter show is much edgier than their Spring as strings accompanied the leopard print, feather headpieces, boxy jackets, and frilled turtlenecks down the aisle. Springboarding from last season, 50s silhouettes transgressed into 70s prints and ruffles with a splash of renaissance-esque sleeves and corsets. The hair this year is a heavy contrast to the pastel shades and coiffed upstyles seen at last season’s show.
A common trend throughout NYFW has been the resurgence of accessories and the Marc Jacobs show was a testament to that! Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau said of the change, “The Marc Jacobs show this season is all about simplistic beauty. There’s not much hair this season – as you know, we can be heavy-handed at this show but Marc decided he wanted to go lighter this season with a soft, clean look to the hair. He really wanted to emphasize real beauty and simplicity. There are a lot of hats in the show, as well. It was fun to work through the process of matching each hat to each girl. I’m using Redken Triple Dry 15 to get this soft, modern texture, with a hat to complement that’s a bit of a nod to the past. The clothes are very done and grand, so we left the hair feeling easy. There’s a nonchalance and sophistication to this ease.”

COACH

While last season as all about the floaty prairie dress, this season late 70’s chic with a twist of punk summed up the Coach Fall/Winter 2019 show! Shearling jackets mixed with checkerboard prints, plaid and fringe with a few bouts of floral were everywhere, while hair also led us through the decades. A chic undone, done look made its way up and down the runway with subtle waves and not so subtle shine.
Of the hair, Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau said, “The look at the Coach show is a luxurious take on skater-y, cool kid. I’ve blown out the hair with Redken Satinwear 04 then added in a bit of movement back in with an iron and Redken Triple Dry 15. Coach’s aesthetic overall is very cool, undone, downtown and easy, and this look really reflects that.”

LONGCHAMP

Longchamp touched down on the runway, pun included. With a jet-setter undertone, travel was a very real undertone at the show, as real as the carpet inspired by the Concorde. Longchamp bridged the gap between New York and Paris by updating Parisian-vibes with an urban flair. Dainty leather studs and bohemian prints juxtaposed each other as hair was French girl cool mixed with New York chic.
The hair was sleek and chic and basically what everyone wishes they looked like when traveling. Wavy and straight at the same time, hopelessly sheen and looks great no matter what outfit you're wearing. “We’ve seen natural hair for quite a while now,” says Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau. “And at Longchamp, we like to have a little bit of a finish so you’ll see me using the blow dryer before the iron so there is a richness to the hair. I’m using the new Redken Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame, which is great in damp hair before the blow dry to seal the hair and add heat protection. Add an iron for a very cool, easy finish.”
GET THE LOOK:
- Start with clean, freshly washed hair using Redken Frizz Dismiss Shampoo and Conditioner.
- Towel dry the hair until slightly damp and use your fingers to create a center part.
- Apply a small amount of Redken Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame through mid-lengths and ends to smooth strands and add heat protection.
- Blow-dry hair using a round brush. If needed, use a large barrel tong throughout your lengths to encourage a natural wave.
- Finish the look with a light spritz of Redken Fashion Work 12.
TORY BURCH
Center parts and classic lines triumph from head to toe, and especially toe – with footwear that turned heads. Trenches, textured layers and knit dresses replaced past seasons of floral prints as her progressive collection took the stage. “At Tory’s show, a normal length braid didn’t feel enough, so adding the hair extensions and making it super long gives it a futuristic, avatar feel to it, but there is still a classic-ness to it.” Said Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau “Tory is all about classics with a twist. I’ve shampooed the hair and blew it dry with Satinwear 04, added the extensions, then used the Dry Shampoo Paste which helps me keep the braid in, then finished it with Forceful 23 hairspray.” This braid reminds us a bit of the braids we saw last year at Alexander McQueen, but this season, they are taking on a more modern feel.

- Apply Redken Satinwear 04 to damp hair and blow dry to a sleek, straight finish.

TOMO KOIZUMI
Making his debut at this year’s NYFW, Japanese Designer Tomo Koizumi brought a renewed sense of excitement to the scene. He was discovered through social media and had his collection shown at the Marc Jacobs Madison Avenue store. With models like Emily Ratajkowski and Bella Hadid gracing the catwalk, Koizumi garnered instant fame for his fantastical designs. Hair featured a wrapped look with faux bangs. Keep reading to see just how Guido Palau got the look!
“We’re backstage at Tomo, which is a very new Japanese designer. We’re doing a head wrap with a fake bang. My main product here is Forceful 23, so when I’m wrapping the hair around the head, it gives the hair a high gloss, high hold to it. Before I do the wrap, I’m placing one row of wefts and cutting a very short, jagged bang to give the very simple, almost elegant shape an edge.” – Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau
GET THE LOOK:
- Starting with dry hair, take a one-inch thick section of hair from temple to temple, pull across the head to the right, and secure with Forceful 23, thus serving as a base for the bang.
- Secure a weft into the front section of hair and use a razor to cut a jagged bang about one inch long, leaving a small section of the bang a little longer than the rest.
- Just below the crown of the head, take a section of hair and pin down to create a base for the head wrap shape.
- Section by section, circularly wrap hair in a clockwise direction around the head, securing each section with pins and Forceful 23 while working around the head shape.
- Finish the look with Forceful 23 for added shine and hold.
R13

A little bit of grunge a little bit of surfer chic this was the stage set last season, and the vibe that continues through to fall. It seems as though punk vibes are making their way back into the fashion scene and Chris Leba’s Fall/Winter 2019 show mixes high fashion with a 90’s-esque grunge factor. His concept this year blossomed from a trip to a thrift shop and left him thinking about American Fashion in a whole new light.
“R13 is a young designer, a super cool reinterpretation of all the classics, so we’re doing the same thing with the hair.” Says Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau. “It’s got a very grungy, kind of punky feel to it almost, and this sort of uncut look feels very new again. I’m using one key product – Redken All Soft Mega Hydramelt – which is a leave-in conditioner to texturize the hair for a great rock-n-roll feeling.”
GET THE LOOK:
- Start with clean, freshly washed hair using Redken All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner.
- Towel dry the hair until slightly damp and use your fingers to create a middle part.
- Apply hair extensions through the back of the head to create an exaggerated length.
