Trends naturally evolve throughout years or seasons, but coming out of lockdown, many clients are looking for bigger and bolder hair transformations with low-maintenance upkeep. With inspiration all around, Thomas Hills, Director of TH1 Hair is detailing a few of the top trends he’s predicting for 2021.
SHAPESHIFTER
Lockdown may have wreaked havoc on our clients’ haircare regimens, but it’s also helped shine a spotlight on what’s really essential in terms of haircare. With this in mind, one of the biggest trends to emerge post lockdown will be shorter more versatile cuts that really encourage a client’s natural texture, with minimum effort required – think effortless shape and movement with a masculine, almost cherubim appeal.
This shape will be a hit is because clients are looking to spend less time blow-drying their hair, therefore opting for air-drying routines instead. These are perfect examples of preparation and shape within the cut, allowing for the fusion of form and texture. Something Thomas Hills predicts will be a huge hit in the upcoming months.
MANPOWER
Bobs with fringes will be a big hit this season due to the fact that it is the most effective way to instantly create a drastic transformation. The sharp, chic fringed bob from my Hell Sexy collection is the epitome of inherent drama within a sleek narrow 80s silhouette. Big voluminous hair can be flirty and exudes sex appeal, but this post-lockdown shape will be more theatrical and commanding. In addition to this, heavy, full fringes will come into play, with traditionally feminine styles peppered with unexpected masculine details – bold fringes being one of them. Offering more inspiration, the Indistinguishable collection showcases an androgynous style, full of boyish detailing and masculine feels, while the subtle gradient cuts and razor sharp edges showcased in my Hell Sexy collection will offer fresh new vibes this season.
MAXI FACTOR
Many clients will have longer than normal hair due to their inability to get a proper cut. While some may wish to chop it off, many others will opt to keep the length and really max it out like JLo. Alongside this, they will be embracing their natural texture or opting for faux non-uniform texture, created with slept-in braids. Ditching hot tools, more will be opting for a natural curl with 90s vibes. Taking inspiration from my Hell Sexy collection, I show this trend with both length and exaggerated texture at its finest and braided roots for an extra wow factor. This extra-long look from my Iconic collection is also the perfect nod to this trend, combining texture and length to great effect. Encourage clients to play around with textures and finishes between roots, mid-lengths and ends, with products that allow them to switch up their textured style from dusty roots to glossy lengths for some post lockdown VA VA room.
NICE ICE BABY!
Silver hair has always been one of my favorite trends, and after a long, and very grey lockdown (in more ways than one), many clients will look to enhance their greys now rather than disguise them. Helped with the news that PANTONE 17-5104 – Ultimate Gray – is one of the colours of the year, I fully expect to see one of my favourite hues take centre stage. The natural and neutral tones will offer clients a feeling of resilience after what has been a very turbulent time. While grey and its many incarnations never go out of style, metallic silver is a new level of chic, and can really help to bring a haircut to life. I particularly love creating a multi-dimensional metallic tone, and this image from my Craft colour collection pulls together this trend perfectly – beautifully bold metallic silver, worn – as it should be – with a sharp, strong cut – for a serious statement and a colour that screams confidence with an icy-cool appeal.
