From imposters crashing the Paris Rooftops at Chanel to the underlying messages about sustainability and the industry’s need to revamp their practices – designers made statements with more than just graphic tees. Their looks and the steps they took to get there – recycled fabrics, locally sourced textiles, and a vintage post-depression feel – spoke volumes about the movements going on behind the scenes. Keep reading to see some of the top shows of the season and the steps Redken creatives took to celebrate their designs with style.

MIU MIU

Miu Miu’s SS20 collection for Paris Fashion week echoed the sentiments of trends taking over the industry. Going back to a time when clothes were revamped, reworked or altered – her show showed us all a peek at the life of 1940s Italy and the humble glamour that came with it.

Creating a truly unique hairstyle to match, Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau created a classic style using a tissue set. “I’ve done a tissue-set, 40s-inspired look at Miu Miu to finish off Paris Fashion Week this season. It’s an old-school way of achieving curls, where you wrap individual sections of hair with a tissue, heat them up with an iron, then allow them to cool. Once you take out the tissues, the result is a soft curl. I’ve then brushed through and shaped the curls into a 40s-style at the front, and squared off in the back. My key product is Redken Triple Dry 15 Dry Texturizing Spray to achieve this airy look.” – Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau

GET THE LOOK:

  1.      Start with clean hair.
  2.      Begin by taking a ½” – 1” section of your hair and apply a heavy amount of Redken Guts 10 over the entire section.
  3.      Roll up a tissue so you have a long, rolled shape, then wrap the section around the tissue, starting at your ends and getting close to the scalp.
  4.      Once the section is done, press the wrapped hair between a flat iron for a few seconds to heat it up.
  5.      Then, clip the section up.
  6.      Continue working around your head until all of your hair is clipped up.
  7.      Allow your hair to cool for about 45 minutes.
  8.      Once your hair has fully cooled, begin unclipping and unrolling each section.
  9.      Once all the sections are down, brush through with a boar-bristled brush to soften the curls.
  10.    Spritz a few spritzes of Redken Triple Dry 15 Dry Texturizing Spray throughout your lengths to get a light, airy texture.
  11.    Using your hands, begin pulling your hair back to behind your shoulders to create a squarish shape.
  12.    Flip your hair over in the front to one side to get a vintage, 40s-style portrait.
  13.    Spritz the NEW! Redken Triple Pure 32 Hairspray over the whole look to hold the front and back shapes all day, without the crunch.

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful collections at Paris Fashion Week, Alexander McQueen was more than just the designs that captured our hearts, it was the sustainable, local and repurposed practices Sarah Burton utilized while creating this collection. Sourcing fabrics from Northern Ireland and recycling McQueen patterns, lace and tulle from previous shows.

Hair looks capitalized on pirates and the high seas. “We’re backstage at Alexander McQueen. McQueen looks always have a touch of romance – always beautiful, always with a touch of British sensibility. I was inspired by pirates and the high seas, with a small braid in the front inspired by Adam and the Ants, who often wore a similar look,” said Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau. “I’ve finished off the braids with a gold ribbon wrapped around them, which gives a slightly Victorian vibe. My key product for this look was Redken Guts 10, which I slathered heavily into each section to give it a product-y feel, which helps to form the braids. I finished with a few spritzes of Redken Shine Flash 02 to reignite the look and give it a high-shine, wet look.” He added.

GET THE LOOK:

  1. Section your hair into three sections, one on each side of your head, and one in the back. Clip up the first two sections.
  2. Taking the remaining section and begin applying a heavy amount of Redken Guts 10 from the lengths to ends to saturate strands.
  3. Once the full section is fully saturated, begin French braiding the hair down to your ends then secure with an elastic.
  4. Repeat on the remaining two sections.
  5. Once all sections are complete, take your center and side section and begin wrapping them over one another at the back of your head, securing with hairpins as you go.
  6. With the remaining section, allow it to stick out off to the side of your head then pin to your head shape to create a 360-degree shape to the overall hair look.
  7. Using a comb, comb out some of the baby hairs at the front of your head and tightly braid the section, securing the end with a small elastic.
  8. Spritz Redken Shine Flash 02 all over the look for added polish.
  9. Use your fingertips to soften around your hairline and allow some remaining baby hairs to peek through.
  10. If desired, wrap a bit of gold ribbon around the braids for an added touch.

SACAI

Kaia Gerber led the way at the PFW SS20 show for Sacai and what followed was an effortless ease and supreme style. Layers upon layers alongside graphic tees, billowy designs and eccentric shapes were mixed with thick-soled boots and strappy sandals. The total look was completed with a natural looking blowout with a slight bend.

AKRIS

Dreamy fabrics and layered textures were at the helm of Albert Kriemler’s geometric-driven creations for Akris. The SS20 runway gleamed from start to finish with details like mesh gloves and an array of their iconic AI bag that weaved a common thread throughout the runway. To complement these shapes Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau capitalized on an extreme side part. Keep reading to see how he got the look!

VALENTINO

The classic white shirt has often been a staple of ready-to-wear fashion. Updating this timeless design, Pierpaolo Piccioli started the SS20 Valentino show with 12 looks that were a tribute to this with a couture feel. With white as the primary, gold was the secondary theme seen throughout the show with gilded eyes and well-styled accessories. Texture was the main component of the hair created by Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau. Keep reading to see just how to get the look.

GIVENCHY

The 90s are back at Givenchy’s SS20 show with a mix of distressed denim and romanticism. The show – titled “NY PARIS 1993” embodied just that. Bra tops and baggy jeans were balanced out with edgy, boyish haircuts. Respectfully, Claire Waight Keller sourced 90s denim and upcycled them for a modern finish this season.

“We’ve cut some of the models’ hair here at the Givenchy show to give them a tomboyish, easy vibe. I’ve used Redken’s NEW! Extreme Play Safe leave in to heat protect the hair while blow-drying, leaving some of the texture to keep it natural, easy, and cool. The looks are effortless and boyish, which gives off a French vibe. We cut one model’s hair from way below her shoulders to just at her ear. I tend to look at each girl, and see their personality from within, then create a character around that and cut the hair to reflect that character.” – Redken Global Creative Director Guido Palau
